180 Degree Rule - Camera Workshop

Image
In this workshop we were taught one of the basic filming techniques, that is, the 180 degree rule. This is put in place so that the audience will know who is talking to who in dialogue sequences. Below is an image which shows how it work. The images shows that when two people are facing each other, there is a line down the middle, this shouldn't be crossed. If this line was crossed and the camera was positioned where the black camera is then the actor would be looking in a different direction. When editing it become a very un-natural cut and can throw of the audience and bring you out of the immersive experience of the film, this is the last thing you want. In the image on the left you can see Callum and I experimenting with this rule in one of our workshops. We had to film a short sequence of two people talking and apply what we have learnt about the 180 degree rule to this. We placed the camera in three different positions, one was over the shoulder of each actor and the other wa...

First Location Shoot

Image
On this day we made a short film at Vinters Park which is a nature reserve not far from our university. This was our first time filming on a location that wasn't at our university so we weren't sure what challenges we were going to face. Once we arrived we decided to follow the path round the corner and found a small open space which would work perfectly for filming.  We had a brief assignment of a 'meeting' and film something that was around a minute long. Callum and I decided to film a mock-western, set up the tripod to use but decided that it would be best to film handheld as we needed to get some shot fairly close to the ground as you can see in the photo to the left. We had a few issues with lighting in certain shots, this was because we weren't able to white balance as we didn't have a piece of paper with us. We also had to be aware of the public around us and make sure that we weren't in anyone's way as it's a public area.  We were very happy ...

Camera Workshop

Image
This image is from our first camera workshop which took place in October. On this day, we were taught the basic of a camera which was really interesting as I've never worked with this type of camera before. The main part of the workshop was to build our knowledge of balancing the camera on a tripod. Building our knowledge of how to balance a camera properly is really important as the last thing you want to happen whilst filming is the the camera to start moving. On the tripod that me and my Callum were using had two friction points which could be used to keep the camera steady. One was located on the left side of the tripod which is visible in the photo, and the other was just below this. The friction point on the left is used to stop the camera leaning forwards of backwards. The reason for the camera doing this is because it wouldn't be centred in the middle of the tripod. The trick we were taught was to hold the handle on the top of the camera and try and balance it on our ...

Lucifer Pilot Review

Image
The show Lucifer is a series about, you guessed it, the devil himself, however he’s not so evil, more comical and charming, a ladies man you could say. The show stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer with his co-star Lauren German as the detective Chloe Decker his partner in crime, well not partner in crime but partner in stopping crime. The series made it debut in 2016 and continued on for six series up until 2021. Throughout Lucifer, he battles issues such as free will, trying escape “Dad” or God and the life that he had planned out for Lucifer. We see him build a relationship with humans, which at times doesn’t go well but we mainly see him build a relationship with Chloe which slowly turns to love, which the devil, doesn’t think he can feel. Figure 1. Introduction to the Pilot. On the first page we have a very clear build of the Lucifer, he’s described as a man with considerable wealth and taste, lusty mischief and timeless style. All rather fitting for the devil, well an angel, which Lu...
